This Kyusu has a unique green color and texture. The green color and rounded shape are wonderfully matched and bring an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. It is very time-consuming to produce this Kyusu and expert skills are required. This unique teapot created by skilled potters will surely fascinate you.
RYOKUDEI refers to the green color of this teapot. Normally, most teapots are SHUDEI red, brown, or gray, but this teapot has a unique green color that is quite distinctive. The unique green color of this Kyusu teapot is created by mixing green pigments with the ceramic clay used to make the Kyusu. The round shape of the Kyusu and the distinctive green color are in perfect harmony, which brings a feeling of peacefulness and tranquility.
The technique called MOGAKE is used for this Kyusu. MO means seaweed and GAKE means wrapping in Japanese. As the name suggests, this Kyusu is fired in the kiln while wrapped with seaweed. Salt contained in the seaweed creates the unique color pattern due to the chemical reaction. It is a very rare technique and can be found only in the Tokoname region of Japan. MOGAKE is a traditional technique, said to have been first used in the Edo period (around 18th century).
Mr. Yukitaka Umehara is the third generation head of Gyokkoh kiln, which has been in operation for three generations in the Tokoname region, a famous Kyusu teapot production area. He carefully creates by hand a variety of Kyusu in different colors, shapes, and sizes to suit the lifestyles of the people who use them. Mr. Umehara has perfected this RYOKUDEI MOGAKE Kyusu over time, so that the handle fits perfectly in the hand of the user.
The ceramic clay of Tokoname, from which this Kyusu is made, contains iron, which reacts with the tannins in the tea to soften the astringency and make the tea mellow. The Kyusu fired using the YAKISHIME technique is also excellent at absorbing excess impurities in the tea, making it possible to brew tea in this Kyusu to create a delicious tea that cannot be tasted in any other Kyusu.
This Kyusu brings a noble and unique atmosphere, as would be expected from an artist of this caliber with steady techniques and enormous effort. If you are searching for a teapot of exceptional first-class quality, this would certainly be ideal.
