HEKI HYO GA means blue glacier in Japanese. The name was inspired by the flow of blue glaze that is expressed on this matcha bowl. The highlight of this teacup is the vivid competition between the two types of glaze that form its expressive motif.
The vivid blue color of this bowl is produced from Turkish glaze known as Turkish blue. The white base of the color tone is made from SHINO glaze, which is different from the usual pale white color, and has a slightly uneven surface that is characteristic of SHINO glaze.
The brown and reddish-brown colors seen in some parts of the Turkish blue patterns are the result of a special chemical change that occurs when the two types of glaze, Turkish and Shino, overlap. It is a fantastic and fascinating color technique that can turn brown or red depending on how the glazes overlap and how much heat is applied during firing in the kiln.
HEKI HYO GA has parallel lines that appear on the surface from the Rokuro-Maki technique, which add a modulating accent visually and make this bowl easy to hold.
This bowl was produced by SHINNYO kiln. Known for their traditional Shigaraki-yaki ware, SHINNYO kiln has been producing simple and rustic style pottery for two generations. However, in the past 10 years, the SHINNYO kiln has been creating more casual, popular, and modern styles, and has been attracting attention from pottery fans.
