This elegant and lovely Yunomi, made with traditional techniques, features a SUZU Japanese bell and is intended to bring good luck.
SUZU means Japanese bell and KOMON means a traditional Japanese pattern.
This Yunomi is decorated with a pattern of SUZU, which is said to ward off evil spirits since ancient times, and KOMON that is believed to bring good luck. Attached to the outside of the Yunomi is a cute doll called IKKANJIN, which represents a figure peering into a well. In fact, this is a traditional design that has been used for various utensils in the tea ceremony since the time of SEN no RIKYU.
The patterns on the surface of the SUZU are SHIPPO, KIKKO, SEIKAIHA and ASA no HA, and these KOMON have been used to decorate Kimonos and other costumes. Each of these patterns is symbolic of eternal happiness, longevity, a peaceful life, and the healthy growth of children. They are all symbols of very good luck. SUZU including this pattern are drawn not only on the exterior but also on the interior of this Yunomi. The two lines on the KOHDAI, the base of the cup, show the delicate handwork of the craftsman and the great care that has gone into the creation of this Yunomi.
The mouth of the teacup is rimmed with iron-rich glaze using a technique called SABIE which gives an accent to the round and cute appearance of the teacup. Also, although it looks heavy at first glance, you will be surprised at how light it is when you hold it. The round, generous form is graceful and lovely, reminding one of a Japanese bell.
The color of Japanese green tea will enliven this teacup even more, once the tea is poured into the cup. We are certain that this Yunomi will enrich your tea time and your life, as KOMON represents. You will surely be fascinated by this elaborate work once you hold it in your hands.
