The gradation of dark blue on a matte white background creates a fantastic atmosphere and gives this teacup an elegant and understated presence. The glossy deep blue and matte-textured white were created in the image of splashing waves on the ocean or snow and clouds on a mountaintop, and were named “IN BLUE” by the artisan, Hozan Tanii.

The ocean is the origin of all life. This teacup, with its blue color similar to the deep blue of the ocean, seems as though it has the power to create something.

The unique matte white glaze is Tanii's original glaze. It is then covered with a glossy, dark blue glaze. The dark blue glaze, which contains cobalt and iron, becomes gradated during firing in the kiln, and the color shade and pattern show various expressions across the surface of this teacup. This gradation is produced by a time-consuming firing method called neutral flame firing. This depth of color is made possible by Tanii's longtime technique of manipulating the flame. This contrast between white and blue, matte and glossy, gives this teacup an understated yet dignified and graceful appearance.
