Review | I just brewed this to completion. Wow. This is a very reasonably priced item, considering the quality. I am working up through the various grades of sencha offered by this company and went with this most recently. 40g is a good amount when you think about how quickly high-grade tea should be consumed. I used a pillbox-style Yunomi and a multi-cup from Touan. The first thing I noticed in the tall Yunomi was the quality of the aroma. A great way to be introduced to the tea. The white background of the more shallow multi-cup brought out an amazing deep green. Asumushi (light steamed) often has a deeper yellow, whereas this Fukumushi (heavy steamed) carries a strong emerald hue. How does it taste? Before I refreshed my memory by reading the product information, I noted the softness of the body. I am used to Fukumushi with a strong, almost harsh catechin aftertaste. There is none of this in the tea being reviewed. It is gentle, and for the better. You still have notes of traditional sencha coming through, but there is definitely a sweetness that can only come from management, the cultivar, and the environment itself. You can tell these leaves were often shrouded in mist and the plant itself protected by the rolling fogs of the Ujitawara hills. I do not mean to sound overly poetic, but when you taste this tea and think about the description given for the best tea terroirs in Japan, you may have the same mental image. Thanks to Atsushi Yasui of Hibiki-An for the help in understanding the origin and significance of this tea. Whether you try it is up to you, but if you do, you will be surprised by this sometimes overlooked but highly charismatic offering. |
