This is an exquisite pottery Yunomi which features a unique, elegant painting style requiring high-level expertise and expert pottery shaping techniques.

SHOSOIN is a repository of treasures located next to TODAIJI Temple in Nara. It has a large collection of Japanese artifacts dating from the 7th to 10th centuries, some of which show cultural influences from the Middle East, Greece, and Rome.

This Yunomi features SHOSOIN designs. The blue tree trunks, leaves painted with transparent green paint, and birds and deer painted against a striking red background remind us of cultures that have long ago passed through many different countries and merged together.

SANSUI landscape is decorated inside the cup and outside the base with the use of blue glaze. Even skilled artisans have difficulty painting inside the teacup, but each piece, such as mountain, woods, house and so on, is decorated with a refined touch. Adding to that difficulty, the shading technique is used only in one single color. This technique not only creates the colorful image, but also provides the appearance of depth.

The lower half of the teacup is elaborately shaved, and the shaved lines create movement in this teacup. The detailed patterns drawn on the diagonally scraped areas create a graceful atmosphere. It is very difficult to scrape diagonally on porcelain, and a highly skilled technique is required for this process. Due to the elaborate shaving, this teacup is surprisingly lighter than it looks. The painting on the diagonally shaved surface gives it movement.

This Yunomi is very thin and lightweight, which is one of the requirements of excellent quality Japanese porcelain. Drawing detailed designs on teacups also requires a high level of skill, and each design is quite elaborate.

Each color of red, blue, green and white glaze is well reflected on this Yunomi teacup, and helps to create a relaxed green moment. We are certain that this Yunomi teacup will enrich the taste of your green tea.
