SEN SORIGATA Chataku (handcrafted saucer: pair)

Handcrafted saucer, diameter: 4.72inch (12cm)
Traditional Yamanaka Nuri lacquer craft

The notable features of these Chataku are the elegant grain, classy red color, and form. These Chataku are coated with lacquer. Lacquer craftsmanship becomes more powerful with each coat of lacquer, as the depth and luster of the color increases. These Chataku are made using only natural wood and lacquer grown in the area, using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.

If you like Japanese tea and tea utensils, you may have noticed that many stores sell inexpensive lacquerware. Our Chataku are genuine lacquerware, made of natural wood and lacquer and crafted by skilled artisans using traditional methods. Genuine lacquerware has a beautiful sheen that develops the more it is used.

SEN means castor aralia and SORIGATA means arched shape. SEN has a beautiful annual ring pattern similar to that of zelkova, and is valued as a building and furniture material. Lacquer is applied using a traditional technique called MEHAJIKI NURI so that this beautiful grain remains.

When viewed from the side, you can see that these Chataku are slightly arched like open flowers. Also, the design is clean and beautiful, with no indentation to catch the KOHDAI, the bottom of the teacup. These Chataku fit well with any size of teacups.

These Chataku have an elegant and refined shine. This is one of the traditional colors of Yamanaka Nuri, and the more you use these Chataku, the shinier and glossier they become.

The atmosphere of these Chataku matches both with sophisticated Yunomi like Kyo-Yaki and well-made earthenware like Shigaraki-Yaki.
