Traditional Kyo-Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Bahan Sakata at Bahan Kiln
This Matcha bowl is graceful and dignified. The combination of the paintings and the decoration of gold brings an extremely elegant atmosphere. The harmony and contrast of natural soil and the elegant decoration are very rare and unique.
MUGEN of this name means fantastic or dreamy in Japanese, and MOMIJI is gold and red color maple leaves. MOMIJI red and gold color maple leaves are a well-loved symbol of autumn, like the SAKURA national flower of Japan is a symbol of spring.
In many cases, painted Matcha Bowl like this use white color, fine textured soil, not brown color and rough textured natural soil in order for the paintings to look sharp and vivid. Mr. Bahan Sakata exquisitely brings out the harmony and contrast of the natural soil and the elegant painting.
Half of the surface both inside and outside of this bowl is coated using a traditional technique called SHIRO KESHO coating with white color earth, along with transparent glaze. Maple leaves are painted on the three surface textures: non glazed, transparent glaze, and SHIRO KESHO. The three textures delight your eyes because the surface and painting looks different on each part.
Dark brown areas, representing the trunk of the maple tree, are created by brushing glaze containing iron directly onto the clay just after the first firing, not over the glaze. It creates a unique atmosphere because the original brown color of the glaze adds a unique impression, and looks interesting and different through the decorations of coated SHIRO KESHO, painted maple leaves, and areas of gold color pigment.
As above, this is a deliberate work, which has the excellent harmony and unique contrast of clay, glazes, and elegant painting. Needless to say, Matcha served in this special bowl will profoundly enrich your heart.
